Avoiding Telephone Scams
Telephone scammers are constantly finding new ways to trick people in to providing sensitive information which often leaves the scam victim in dire straits financially. Protect yourself from gift card scams by knowing how to spot and avoid a scam.
Scammers will often ask for gift cards in exchange for taxes, bail money, debt collection, or physical items like cars. For example, scammers have recently started tricking people into providing Google Play gift cards. The scammer will ask the person to purchase Google Play cards from the nearest retailer and then ask for the code on the back in order to use the money on the gift card.
Google Play gift cards are used to make purchases like apps and music from the Google Play store and cannot be redeemed for cash. Once the victim has purchased the card and given the scammer the info, they’re out the money they spent.
